Elgin tree heads to Chicago for Christmas

Donna Atkinson of Elgin bid adieu Thursday to her 57-foot Colorado blue spruce. Next stop is Daley Plaza in Chicago where the tree will be the city's official Christmas tree. The annual tree lighting ceremony is Nov. 25.

Atkinson has been trying for years to get the city to select her tree. Since Atkinson moved to Elgin in 1990 she estimates the tree has grown 15 feet.

"The third time wasn't the charm, but maybe the fourth will be," Atkinson wrote in her nomination to the city.

Atkinson and her family will attend the tree lighting ceremony.
