Workshop will teach the 'how-to poem'

The Northwest Cultural Council announces a Second Saturday Poetry Workshop to be held from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Nov. 8, led by Jennifer Dotson. Saturday's topic will be "The How-To Poem from the Functional to the Fanciful."

In the how-to, the poet assumes the voice of the sage, the teacher, the guru. Subjects and styles are unlimited from practical advice for the perfect martini to identifying cloud shapes or speaking to cats. Who needs Wikipedia when these poems provide all the answers and more?

Jennifer Dotson is the founder and program coordinator for www.highlandparkpoetry.org. Her poetry has appeared in After Hours, East On Central, CRAM/JOMP and Poetic License Press? anthology A Midnight Snack. Her debut collection, "Clever Gretel," was published in April 2013 by Chicago Poetry Press.

Dotson teaches creative writing classes for District 113's Continuing Education program. She received a master of fine arts degree in drama from the University of Virginia. With her theater training and extensive acting credits, Dotson will share performance tips and tricks to give poets confidence at open-mics and readings.

Participants are encouraged to bring 15 copies of their own work to share with the group. Workshops take place at the Palatine Public Library, 700 N. North Court, Palatine, the second Saturday of each month. All poets and writers are invited to attend the workshop. The cost is $15. Please R.S.V.P. to (847) 382-6922 or nwcc@northwestculturalcouncil.org.
