Elgin man sentenced to 10 years in prison after attack, resisting arrest
An Elgin man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for multiple offenses he committed during an April 2013 domestic attack, officials said.
On April 18, 2013, Patrick A. Carter, 45, of the 1900 block of Matthew Court in Elgin, attacked the mother of three of his children and her acquaintance as she was returning home, according to a news release. The acquaintance drove to the Elgin Police Department with Carter hanging out of the front passenger door, officials said.
Once there, Carter grabbed the gun belt of an Elgin police officer who tried to help, and he resisted another officer who tried to arrest him. One of the officers ended up slightly injured.
Carter was convicted in July of vehicular invasion, aggravated battery to a police officer and aggravated resisting arrest, all of which are felonies.
According to the news release, Carter got an "enhanced" sentence because of his criminal background. The Elgin man has six prior felony convictions for crimes including unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and unlawful possession of a stolen motor vehicle.
Carter will be receiving credit for at least 559 days served in Kane County jail.
