Fire damages Batavia apartments

A Batavia firefighter was injured when a three-story apartment building caught fire Monday afternoon in a blaze fire officials blame on "discarded smoking materials."

Firefighters responded shortly before 3 p.m. to 934 Lorlyn Circle for a fire that started on the balcony of one unit, fire officials said in a statement.

The fire spread to the building's roof and one unit had smoke and water damage, causing a total of $75,000 in damage.

All occupants were able to safely evacuate, and one firefighter suffered a minor undisclosed injury.

The building is in the Lorlyn Apartments complex off Maple Lane. The complex was built in 1973, according to Batavia Township assessment records.
