Enjoy 'Scots and Water' at Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band concert
The Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band will present its 13th annual fall concert, "Scots and Water," at 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2, at Buffalo Grove High School.
Howard Green, founding music director, will conduct more than 70 musicians who make up the Buffalo Grove Symphonic and Jazz Bands.
The concert will feature music depicting and celebrating Scotland, the sea, and other water themes. Selections will include Mendelssohn's "Overture to Fingal's Cave," symphonic highlights from "Frozen," Malcolm Arnold's "Four Scottish Dances" and "Rising Dragons." The jazz band will perform "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea," "Bridge Over Troubled Water," and other selections.
Members of the Artists' League of Buffalo Grove also will be exhibiting their works at the event.
Tickets are $12 at the door, $10 in advance, $8 at all times for students and seniors. They can be purchased from band members, at village hall, 50 Raupp Blvd., or by calling (847) 459-2518.
The symphonic band will feature Green as a soloist in a performance of a piece of music not available in the United States for more than 20 years - Alexander Manevich's "Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra," written in 1955 and transcribed for band in 1994 by Kelly Burke of the University of North Carolina.
The piece, which has not been available because of copyright problems between the United States and Russia, draws upon the folk dance influences of the composer's homeland. Green describes the piece as "even containing a bit of Klezmer."
"Well, I guess you might say it really flows well," said Green about the "Scots and Water" theme. "Seriously, though, it's a wonderful piece of music, and even though it may not have been written by a Scotsman or have anything to do with water, I know people will still enjoy it."
The Jazz and Symphonic Bands also will be playing Christmas concerts in December at local churches and a major concert May 2 Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire. Its website is BGSB.org.
