Democratic America will survive Obama
Democratic America will survive Obama
The mid-term election means a Republican Senate 51 percent majority. Don't hold your breath for the next two years waiting for any substantive legislation. But Congressional-Presidential gridlock got us used to that.
Overwhelmed by scandal, international disease and military crisis accompanied by an absence of fundraisers, President Obama will be retired in place. Nothing new there either. He might begin writing his legacy, a document any library's periodical section. He may start negotiating his pay for speech-giving, his only demonstrated skill.
An ongoing democratic (small "d") America will exist in the wake of Obama's exit because the Republic still works. His arrogance and narcissism of "phone and pen" legislation still answers to our system of checks and balances.
By design, U.S. governmental effectiveness has never relied on its presidents, even those who thought they were king. America's purple mountains are majestic, not its leaders. Even a dysfunctional government has the sense to transfer its power in an orderly manner satisfying even the strictest Presbyterian elder.
The delusional, stone-walling half-truths of a failed presidency can't shake our constitutional roots.
Those linking this nation's demise to this president assign him too much undeserved influence, though he'd gladly take it. This nation needs to know that the "fat lady isn't about to sing," unless it's Kate Smith doing "God Bless America."
