Boys golf: Vernon Hills ninth after first day of 2A tourney

Vernon Hills' boys golf team finds itself in ninth place after the first day of the Class 2A state tournament Friday at Weibring Golf Club on the campus of Illinois State University in Normal.

The Cougars (337) were paced by senior Ricky Schmidt, whose 80 (tie for 24th) included a birdie on the par-4 ninth hole. Vernon Hills' other rounds included sophomore Justin Park's 84, freshman Brian Favia's 86, and 87s by senior Stephen Levine and freshman Ethan Lee. Senior Bo Manso shot an 88.

Morton (312) is in first place followed by Glenbard South (316) in second. Champaign Centennial and Galesburg are tied for third (322 each).

Grayslake Central junior Kyle Reynolds carded an 81 and is tied for 33rd.

In the Class 3A state meet at The Den at Fox Creek Golf Course in Bloomington, Stevenson senior Jason Gohde carded an 82 (tie for 56th), while his sophomore teammate Kamaren Sandhu had an 88 (tie for 99th).

Hinsdale Central's 300 is good for first place followed by New Trier (303), Barrington (310), Lake Forest (312) and Lyons (313) to round out the top five.

Barrington was led by junior Burke Barsamian (75), sophomores Timothy Lim (77) and Tom Calbi (77), and junior Cole Kempinski (81).

Lake Forest got sub-80 rounds from seniors Mac Montagne (74, tie for fourth), Quinn Gaughan (78) and Sean Casey (78).
