Shooting suspect caught after passers-by spotted him

Scott B. Peters — the Holiday Hills man suspected of shooting two McHenry County sheriff's deputies who were responding to a domestic disturbance Thursday — will be in court this morning to face charges of attempted murder and aggravated battery with a firearm. Peters had been on the loose for almost 16 hours, but he didn't get more than 6 miles away. The two deputies are resting in separate hospitals after surgeries were required on them. Tim Kindstrom was driving home from work on Smith Road in Crystal Lake when he said he saw sheriff's deputies taking Peters into custody. Full story.

Opiate overdose reversal drug saves 25 lives in DuPage

DuPage County authorities say 25 lives have been saved since the county started a program that equips local police officers with the opiate overdose reversal drug Narcan. The DuPage Narcan Program, part of the county's multitiered effort to combat heroin, is training officers on how to administer the drug. While paramedics long have been equipped to provide Narcan to overdose victims, the first police officers trained to use the drug were deployed in January. Full story.

Man gets 78 years for shooting Elgin boy

An admitted Aurora gang member was sentenced to 78 years in prison yesterday for the shooting death of a 5-year-old Elgin boy and the attempted murder of his father. Miguel Hernandez, 30, sat expressionless as Judge Bridget Hughes imposed the sentence for the Oct. 7, 2011, murder of Eric Galarza Jr., who was struck in the head with a bullet and killed when Hernandez shot six semiautomatic rounds into a car in which the victim, his parents, two younger siblings and an aunt were riding. Judge: Crystal Lake South bleachers must come down

A McHenry County judge has ruled that Crystal Lake South High School must disassemble the stadium bleachers constructed during the summer of 2013 without zoning approvals from the city, a media report said. Judge Michael Chmiel ordered Community Unit School District 155 to take down the 51-foot-tall bleachers, which back up to homes on the 1100 block of Amberwood Drive, starting Dec. 1. Neighbors sued the district last year, arguing that the $1.2 million bleachers were too high and too close to their homes. Full story.

Negotiations break down again in Waukegan school district

A strike in Waukegan Unit District 60 will continue into the weekend, now two weeks after some 1,200 teachers hit the picket lines. District officials said schools would remained closed, after negotiations broke down again Wednesday night. Some 17,000 students, from kindergartners to high schoolers, have been out of school since the strike began. Full story.

Streamwood father wins $1.3 million lottery prize

A Streamwood man won $1.3 million in the Illinois Lottery's Lucky Day Lotto — the largest jackpot in that game to date. Mrugesh Desai plans to pay off his house and save for his children, with one in college and the other headed there. “God gave me this money as a gift,” he said. Full story.

The San Francisco Giants are headed to the World Series after Travis Ishikawa's dramatic 3-run walk-off homer last night to clinch the NL Championship Series. Butler leads Bulls past Atlanta

The Bulls rallied from a 21-point deficit with 11 minutes to play and were able to beat the Atlanta Hawks 85-84 last night in an exhibition game. Jimmy Butler hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to cap a 20-point fourth quarter. Full story.

Police released pictures of Scott B. Peters, 52, and considered him armed and dangerous as suburban and state police conducted a manhunt for him in McHenry County.
