Waukegan plans mediated talks amid teacher strike

Teachers continue to strike in Waukegan after negotiations between the school district and teachers union over the weekend.

The board of education for Waukegan Community Unit School District No. 60 says a negotiating session with a federal mediator is being scheduled. It says representatives from both sides had a nearly 14-hour negotiation session on Sunday and exchanged multiple contract proposals.

The board says a "significant gap remains" on teachers' salaries because the union is pushing for up to 9 percent increases. It says such raises wouldn't be feasible for the district to maintain.

Teachers went on strike Oct. 2.
