No guarantee of freedom from religion

In reference to the Sept. 27 letter by Timothy Matta, I beg to differ with his commentary. He claims that "Islam and Christianity directly lead to no less than honor killings, stonings, beheadings, genital mutilation, child marriages, cover-up of child sexual abuse and shaming of natural evolution of human sexuality."

In reference only to Christianity, the writer certainly does not understand Christ's call to love God and love neighbor, doing unto your neighbor as one would have your neighbor do unto you. Yes, all those who strive to be Christians do not "magically" become incapable of doing wrong. All of us are human, imperfect and sinners. But where does Christianity say it is acceptable to commit child sexual abuse? The problem with Christianity is that "it has not been tried as yet," as G.K. Chesterton writes.

Furthermore, our Founding Fathers recognized that all human rights come from "the Creator" and not the state and that the state has no power to "establish" religion, that is prescribe how its citizens shall worship or otherwise relate to the Creator. All are free to practice religion as they choose. But religion is simply the human reaction or relation to God, the Creator. Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Christians react to God in different ways because they know Him in different ways, just as the atheist reacts by denying the very existence of the Creator.

But to say the Constitution guarantees freedom "from" religion is a stretch. Just as some, including those who believe in the Creator, use science to explain reality, religion, going beyond what our human senses can experience in the temporal world, can also explain a much greater reality.

Let us all reason together to find the truth.
