St. Edward's Scully advances to sectional

Ryann Scully will have a story to tell her kids and grandkids about one hole she played during the Class A Genoa-Kingston girls golf regional at The Oak Club Wednesday.

What Scully can do, though, is tell a story in which she had an 18 - yes, an 18 - on a hole and still qualified for the sectional.

"On the ninth hole I got into the sand by the green in two (shots)," Scully said, "and it was all downhill from there. It took me 12 shots to get out of that sand."

Nevertheless, Scully's 18-hole round of 108, while far from what the St. Edward senior would have hoped for, was good enough to move her on to the Watseka sectional at Shewami Country Club on Saturday. Scully will be seeking her second-straight trip to the state final tournament, which is next weekend in Decatur.

"It was really tough and I did not play well," Scully said. "That (ninth) hole pretty much ruined my score."

Richmond-Burton, led by medalist Blake Betke with a medalist round of 82, won the team title with a 373. Johnsburg and Somonauk also qualified as teams for the sectional.

Class AA: Senior Emily Jean beat teammate and classmate Larissa Luloff on the first hole of a playoff to win the individual title for the team champion Crystal Lake co-op team at its own regional at Crystal Woods. They each shot 78 in regulation, leading their team to a 338, which was 29 shots better than second place Rockford Guilford. Rockford Boylan earned the third spot in next Monday's Conant sectional at Fox Run in Elk Grove with a 372.

Huntley senior Gillian Young (92), freshman Katie Weidner (95) and sophomore Caroline Giorgi (99) also qualified as individuals, as did Jacobs sophomore Carly Sidor (96).
