After mulling sale, Silver Stallion restaurant owner to stay put in Des Plaines

The Silver Stallion restaurant in Des Plaines is keeping its doors open, even though its owner toyed with the idea of selling to a seafood restaurant.

Owner Gus Kalantzis said Monday he's changed his mind, and his restaurant at 1275 Lee St. will stay put, where it's been serving omelettes, coffee and other diner faire for 32 years.

A published report last week said the Silver Stallion was being sold to the owners of Boston Fish Market, a seafood distributor that operates a small restaurant a block away at 1225 Forest Ave.

"I got so many calls every day, 'Why you leaving? Why you sell?'" Kalantzis said. "The best place is in Des Plaines. Right now we're doing nothing. We're staying here for a while."

A representative of Boston Fish said Monday "there's no restaurant we're buying in town," and that the business will stay at its current location.

Boston Fish received retroactive zoning approval from the city council in February for the small dining area inside its retail location. It opened its wholesale and retail business in Des Plaines in 2011.
