Genghis Grill closes in Wheaton, new restaurant coming
A build your own stir-fry restaurant in downtown Wheaton has closed, but officials say another eatery is expected to fill the vacant storefront in the coming months.
Downtown Wheaton Association Executive Director Paula Barrington said Genghis Grill, at 106 N. Hale St., closed Sept. 29 after 7 years in business.
"It was a surprise announcement," she said, adding that the restaurant had been doing "quite well" in recent years.
The owners, Derek and Victoria Bromstead, are moving out of state to be closer to family, Barrington said. Derek served for several years on the Downtown Wheaton Association's board of directors, and Barrington said the restaurant was an active business in the community that regularly helped out with fundraisers.
"We are sorry to see Genghis Grill go," she said.
Genghis Grill is a franchise business, but according to the company website, there are no other locations in Illinois.
On the review website Yelp, the Bromsteads left a message thanking customers for the restaurant's success.
"We have been blessed to meet many, many wonderful people, and we have had terrific staff members too," they said. "We will always be grateful for the time that we had in Wheaton."
Barrington said the owner of the building has already leased the commercial space out to another restaurant, although the name has not been released yet.
"We are looking forward to finding out what that restaurant will be," she said. "It's still a very viable property here in downtown Wheaton."
