Like the song, teach your children well

Letters from readers always interest me because the opinions are so diverse. I agree with most of the opinions expressed by the writers whose letters appeared in your paper Sept. 22. But, as usual, I feel I have to add my two cents worth. So, here goes.

I always carry a copy of the Constitution with me. I would advise everyone to do the same. And read it. It's still relevant. Really. It outlines what the federal government should be doing. Everything else should be done by state and local government. Who knows better what will work where you live. Maybe you, because it's your home. The federal government refers to the Midwest as flyover country. Remember that when you cast your votes.

Additionally, I would suggest that parents and grandparents make sure their children's school teaches U.S. history, and that they teach just the facts, no left or right slant. Also, children should know about current events. They should read newspapers and watch the news. I am not suggesting that very young children be exposed to all the violent things that happen in our world; but they should be aware of news they can process according to their age. Unfortunately, many college students don't know who the vice-president is, from what country we gained our independence, or who we fought in World War II.

If our young people don't know our past, how can they make sure they don't make the same mistakes when they are in charge of our country? It's up to adults to teach their children well. I think there's a song about that.

Get involved. Make your voice heard. Vote. Teach. All of these things are needed for the very survival of the country we love.
