McLeod marks anniversaries as Hoffman trustee, mayor

Hoffman Estates Mayor Bill McLeod marked two close anniversaries this week regarding his service to the village.

Thirty-four years ago - and only two years after he moved to the village - McLeod was appointed a trustee on the village board.

And 14 years ago, the death of longtime Mayor Mike O'Malley led to McLeod succeeding him.

At Monday's village board meeting, McLeod fondly remembered O'Malley and his many contributions to Hoffman Estates, which included helping persuade Sears to relocate its Chicago headquarters to the village.

McLeod also thanked the residents of Hoffman Estates for their support, as well as all the people he'd worked with over the past 34 years for making his service to the village personally rewarding.

McLeod already has surpassed O'Malley's tenure as both a trustee and mayor. O'Malley was elected mayor in 1989 after one term as a village trustee. He died in September 2000 at the age of 58 after suffering a heart attack while hospitalized for respiratory problems.
