Wheaton Warrenville athletes lend hand in community

More than 250 varsity student-athletes from Wheaton Warrenville South High School will perform community service projects Sunday as part of the third annual Tiger Day of Caring program.

For one day during each of the school's fall, winter and spring sports seasons, athletes lend a hand to those in need.

Through the Tiger Day of Caring, student-athletes hope to show their appreciation for the support and partnership they receive from the community, organizers said.

Elissa Schwass, Wheaton Warrenville South dean and event organizer, says students really look forward to the day of service.

"Our partner organizations really love having our athletes as well," she said. "They look forward to each day of service because our students make such an impact."

Athletes will be spread across the community and will perform community service as a team. Here's a list of their projects:

• Girls Swimming/Diving: landscaping and beautification at Jefferson Early Childhood Center;

• Girls Volleyball: assisting in food transportation at Immanuel Food Pantry in Warrenville;

• Girls Dance/Cheer: providing day care services for Sunday church service at Blanchard Alliance Church;

• Girls Tennis: organizing sports activities for children at Marian Park;

• Boys Cross Country: landscaping and beautification at Wheaton Warrenville South High School;

• Girls Cross Country: playing bingo with residents at the DuPage Convalescent Center;
