You're invited to Fran Gustafson's 100th birthday party in St. Charles

Longtime St. Charles resident Fran (Kirby) Gustafson will be 100 years old on Sept. 30. The community is invited to join a birthday party to celebrate a century of love and mission from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, in the fellowship hall of St. Charles Congregational United Church of Christ, 40W451 Fox Mill Blvd., St. Charles.

Raised on a farm in Beason, Ill., she later attended the University of Illinois where she earned a degree in the new field of women's physical education. In 1937, she came to St. Charles and became the only P.E. teacher in town for boys and girls covering first through 12th grade in four schools. She had no car so she walked from one school to another regardless of the weather. She married Wirth Gustafson, a young math and chemistry teacher in St. Charles in 1939. Even though she was married, the school district allowed her to keep her job.

In 1989, the newly built Ferson Creek Elementary School was dedicated in honor of Fran and Wirth for their dedication and commitment to children and especially children of St. Charles Unit District 303.
