Man admits stealing 70-inch TV from his Elgin workplace

A 51-year-old Chicago man on Tuesday admitted stealing a 70-inch television from the Elgin trucking company where he worked.

William Purtell pleaded guilty to theft. He had no criminal background and was free on an individual recognizance bond.

Cook County Judge Thomas Fecarotta sentenced him to 18 months of probation and ordered him to pay restitution to the victims.

Restitution totaled about $1,800 said Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Mike Gerber, adding that the victims were satisfied with the disposition of the case.

Prosecutors said Purtell, while working as an inbound terminal manager for Estes Express, took the television and sold it to a Chicago pawnshop. Police linked him to the stolen property from pawnshop surveillance video and from his drivers' license.
