Election not about filling out foursome

In a recently released Tribune poll Illinois voters favor Pat Quinn over Bruce Rauner 48 percent to 37 percent. What I found most interesting about the poll results was the response to two of the poll questions.

When asked if they approve of Quinn's job performance, 49 percent said they disapprove versus 36 percent who approve. When asked which candidate is more in touch with people "like you," 49 percent said Quinn, 30 percent Rauner. The Tribune pointed out "that Quinn has been able to paint the wealthy Republican equity investor as out of touch."

What the results say to me is that Illinois voters are prepared to re-elect a candidate who, along with the leaders of his party, has perpetuated the many fiscal problems of the state of Illinois. Somehow this a man they say they can connect with. For the record, Pat Quinn is a career politician who, as governor, makes $177,000 per year. How many of the "can connect" respondents have incomes any where near that figure? How many have held even one political office in their careers? How many have a law degree from Northwestern University? How do they connect with Pat Quinn?

This election isn't about choosing someone to fill out your golf foursome or show up for a tailgate party. It's about restoring fiscal sanity to our once great state. Bruce Rauner will not be able to cure all of the state's fiscal ills overnight. However, he can start the process by applying management skills that he has used to create wealth for himself and his many clients including small businesses and many state pension funds.

It is time for a leadership change in Illinois.
