New 236,000-square-foot distribution center being built in Des Plaines

Officials broke ground Thursday on a 236,000-square-foot distribution facility on Des Plaines' south side that could be leased to as many as six tenants, officials said.

Elk Grove Village-based Liberty Property Trust is constructing the building on a 16-acre site at 333 Howard Ave. Crews are currently removing a 290,000-square-foot building that's more than 60 years old and functionally obsolete, company officials said. Liberty bought the property for $8 million this summer from Alcon Laboratories, a vision company. The building has been vacant since November 2013.

The new $22.7 million development will have 65 exterior docks and room to park 389 cars or 51 trailers on site, in addition to the 283 spaces around the building perimeter.

In June, Des Plaines aldermen endorsed a Cook County Class 6b tax incentive application for the project, allowing the property to be assessed at lower levels over the course of 12 years.

Occupancy is slated for early 2015.
