Palatine's Golf Nation to close Oct. 1

Golf Nation, a year-round golf club in Palatine, announced Tuesday that it will close at the end of the month.

The golf and fitness facility, at 399 N. Quentin Road, earned national acclaim upon its debut in 2008.

While the club offered a one-of-a-kind experience and attracted over 500 members in its first year, a challenging economy and cutbacks by consumers on discretionary spending resulted in Golf Nation never quite growing to a sustainable level, according to a news release.

The fitness club features indoor golf, outdoor golf, a driving range, golf lessons, golf simulators (virtual golf) and a bar and grill.

"We have an amazing facility and truly offer a combination of golf and fitness that's only found here," said Tim Wuhrman, Golf Nation's general manager. "We were recognized as the best new facility in America and have consistently been ranked a Top 100 practice facility. Add to that our outstanding fitness center and the great social aspect for members and, quite frankly, it's unfortunate."

Co-founder and owner Bob DiMeo shares Wuhrman's views. "Golf Nation has been a labor of love and we positively impacted hundreds of lives … perhaps even helped save some. The golf and fitness along with the friendships built among the members was truly special. I'm so proud of our staff and feel blessed we were able to contribute to the community for a meaningful number of years," he said.

Golf Nation's final day of operation is Sept. 30. Prepaid membership dues will be refunded accordingly and a portion of staff retained to facilitate the wind down over the coming months.

A variety of equipment can be purchased from the club including golf, fitness, televisions, computers and kitchen appliances.
