The Holmstad celebrates Active Aging Week, Sept. 21-27

The Holmstad, a not-for-profit continuing care retirement community administered by Covenant Retirement Communities, is joining the International Council on Active Aging to promote the benefits of a healthy lifestyle during ICAA's Active Aging Week, Sept. 21-27, 2014.

This year's theme: "Let the Adventure Begin." The weeklong event is open to the public, and unless specified is free of charge.

On Sunday, Sept. 21, "The Adventure Begins" with an ice cream social and Adventure Activities at 2 p.m. in the Residential Courtyard. Kick off Active Aging Week with delicious ice cream treats and take part in a variety of adventure activities suitable for a range of physical abilities.

On Monday, Sept. 22, "It's Never Too Late!" with indoor sky diving at iFLY at 9 a.m. Experience the thrill of sky diving without having to jump out of a plane! Naperville's indoor sky diving facility will let you experience a free-fall feeling in its vertical wind tunnel. An accredited instructor will guide you. On Tuesday, Sept. 23, with the theme, "Adventure Stories," see the adventure movie, "The African Queen" at 12:30 p.m. in the multipurpose room. Sit back and enjoy the 1951 adventure film "The African Queen," starring Katharine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart. They will provide the popcorn. Then get ready to sway and tap your feet when the Running Fox Bluegrass Band takes the stage at 7 p.m. in the Commons Auditorium. This veteran group has been bringing audiences to their feet with their banjo, guitar, mandolin and string bass performances for more than 30 years.

On Wednesday, Sept. 24, join in "Discoveries in Food, Nature and Art" at 9 a.m. at Fabyan Villa Museum and Japanese Tea Garden. Join them for a beautiful art and nature adventure! Tour the villa that was redesigned by Frank Lloyd Wright and enjoy tea in the Japanese Tea Garden, designed in 1910 by Japanese landscape architect Taro Otsuka. Cost is $6. Register by Sept. 22; call The Holmstad concierge at (630) 879-4000. Then see the Oktoberfest Cooking Demo at 2 p.m. at Michealsen Dining Room. Discover the food and drink of Germany during this fun Oktoberfest cooking demo.

On Thursday, Sept. 25, take "A Fitness Adventure" with a fitness walk at Red Oak Nature Center. Bus leaves from The Holmstad at 9 a.m. Put on your walking shoes and join fitness coordinator Ellyn Limbaugh for a morning stroll at the scenic Red Oak Nature Center. Explore 40 acres of lush forest, wildlife habitat and the only cave in the Aurora area. Register by Sept. 24; call (630) 879-4000. Bring your own lunch and water.

On Thursday, Sept. 25, there will be a "Balance and Fall Risk Assessment"at 3 p.m. in the Fitness Center. Every year, one in three adults age 65 and older falls. Take advantage of our free balance and fall risk assessment. Learn exercises to help improve your balance.

On Friday, Sept. 26, join in "The Joy of Exploration: A Chicago Exploration. The bus leaves from The Holmstad at 9 a.m. Take a road trip to Chicago, where you will view the city from the Chicago Skydeck. After, head to Yolk restaurant, which in 2008 was voted "best breakfast" by Fox News viewers in Chicago. Our adventure will continue with a visit to the Holy Name Cathedral and the Newberry Library. On Saturday, Sept. 27, "Put the Pedal to the Metal" at 5:30 p.m. at Sycamore Speedway. Be inspired by watching racers participate in the "Run What They Brung" race. No fancy cars here, just making the most of the car they have. Cost is $15. Reserve your spot by Sept. 24; call The Holmstad concierge at (630) 879-4000.
