Suburban ceremonies recall loss of 9/11

A number of suburban communities held Sept. 11 remembrance ceremonies Thursday on the 13th anniversary of the terrorist attacks. “I've been asked why we do this each year,” said Schaumburg Fire Lt. Missing woman discovered in Des Plaines pond

Des Plaines police are looking into the circumstances surrounding the death of a 51-year-old woman found floating face down in a pond yesterday afternoon outside the Prairie Lakes Community Center. Authorities say the victim's family members reported her missing after she failed to show up for work at her job in Des Plaines. Police were able to pin her cellphone to a location near Prairie Lakes. Full story.

Judge delays Cook County puppy mill ban

Cook County's new puppy mill ban, set to go into effect Oct. 1, won't be able to be enforced just yet, after a federal judge's ruling to delay implementation of the law. U.S. District Court Judge Matthew F. Kennelly yesterday issued the order, as a lawsuit filed this week by three suburban pet store owners works its way through the court system. The law would require pet stores to only sell dogs, cats and rabbits obtained from shelters, humane adoption centers and small-scale breeders. Full story.

Acting mayor named in Oakwood Hills amid resignations

Oakwood Hills Trustee Paul Smith has taken the helm as acting village president in the tiny McHenry County suburb rocked by controversy over a proposed power plant. The move comes after the resignations this week of Village President Melanie Funk, Village Attorney John Cowlin and Trustee Beth Gorr. Funk said in a resignation letter that she and the village board did nothing wrong or illegal, and defended the village board's decision to sign a “hosting agreement” with the developer even before the power plant proposal came before the zoning board. Lake County undersheriff sues former sheriff candidate for defamation

The second-highest ranking member of the Lake County sheriff's office has filed a defamation lawsuit against a former sheriff candidate over comments posted on Facebook. Raymond Rose, named Lake County undersheriff in 2013, is seeking $100,000 plus punitive damages after former sheriff's deputy John Krempotic called Rose “schizophrenic” in a posting on the social media website. Dad accused of killing 5 kids had criminal past in McHenry County

The South Carolina man accused of killing his five children and dumping their bodies in Alabama went on a McHenry County crime spree 13 years ago. Timothy R. Jones, 32, was convicted on a host of offenses, including car theft, burglary and forging nearly $2,000 in checks in September 2001, according to court and prison records and a family member. Jones, 19 at the time, lived on the 200 block of Granada Road in Carpentersville. Full story.

Chicago Wolves to extend Allstate Arena contract for five more years

The Chicago Wolves plan to play at the Allstate Arena for at least another five years, after Rosemont and Wolves officials were able to reach a verbal agreement yesterday. The five-year deal, which will likely be considered by the village board Oct. 8, includes an additional five-year option. Full story.

Sky return to Pavilion for elimination game

The Chicago Sky face a do-or-die elimination game tonight in their WNBA Championship series against the Phoenix Mercury, who leads the best-of-five series 2-0. The Sky return to their original home, the UIC Pavilion, for the 7 p.m. tipoff due to a scheduling conflict at the Allstate Arena. Full story.

Sale brilliant in win over A's

White Sox ace Chris Sale got the ball Thursday afternoon at chilly U.S. Cellular Field, and made quick work of the A's in a 1-0 win that took only 2 hours and 18 minutes. Scott Gregor reports. Full story.
