Boomers earn berth in championship series

MARION - The Schaumburg Boomers earned the chance to defend their Frontier League title, edging the Southern Illinois Miners 2-1 Thursday to capture their best-of-three divisional series by the same margin.

Seth Webster, who pitched the Boomers to victory in the wild-card game Saturday, worked 7 innings and allowed 1 run. Dexter Price pitched a perfect inning to earn a save.

Trailing 1-0, the Boomers tied the game in the fourth when Jordan Dean doubled and later scored on an error. The Boomers notched what proved to be the winning run in the fifth when Mark Nelson's sacrifice fly drove home Alexi Colon. The Boomers' Joe De Pinto had 3 hits.

The Boomers open the best-of-five championship series on the road Saturday against the River City Rascals. The two teams tied for the West Division title during the regular season but have not played since July.
