Carol Stream Library launches reading program

Carol Stream Public Library has launched a family based program aimed at promoting reading readiness among some of the village's youngest residents.

In the new "1,000 Books Before Kindergarten" program, parents are encouraged to read 1,000 books to their children before the youngsters start kindergarten.

"That exposure to language and rhythm and just all of the things that are inherent in children's books help the children develop the early literacy and the reading readiness skills they need to become more successful readers," said Mary Clemens, the library's assistant director and head of youth services.

The program is open to only Carol Stream Library cardholders.

When families register, they get a binder for each child that includes a log where parents can keep track of the books they read to their child.

At the time of signup, families also get to choose a free book for each child.

For every 100 books read, participants can go back to the library to get another free book and a new log.

"So if they go all the way through the program and get all the way through 1,000 books, they'll have earned 11 books for their home library," Clemens said.

If parents read the same book multiple times, Clemens said that counts as more than one book. Other caregivers, including grandparents and older siblings, also can read to youngsters as part of the program.

Clemens said the goal is twofold.

"By the time kids start kindergarten, we want them to have the foundation they need to become successful readers," she said. "For us, the other goal is to increase access to print materials and kind of build that concept of establishing a home library."

Similar programs exist at other libraries, Clemens said. As of Friday, 207 children were registered in Carol Stream.

"Our long-term goal for this," Clemens said, "is that every child in Carol Stream starts school ready to read."
