75 mailboxes smashed in Schaumburg; arrests made

Two teens were arrested early Monday morning after Schaumburg police say they smashed as many as 75 mailboxes on the city's northwest side.

Police officers were called to the Kingsport subdivision just before 1 a.m. for reports of a white car with a passenger using a pipe to smash mailboxes, police said. The car was located a short time later.

The smashing happened to mailboxes roughly in the area of Weathersfield Way between Roselle Road and Plum Grove Road, and also on Walnut Lane between Schaumburg Road and Bode Road, Sgt. John Nebl said.

"The quick response and effective teamwork by our midnight shift officers was exemplary in this case," Schaumburg Police Chief Jim Lamkin said in a statement.

Eric A. Beck, 19, of Hoffman Estates was charged with multiple counts of misdemeanor criminal damage to property. A 17-year-old Hoffman Estates juvenile was also charged with misdemeanor criminal damage to property.

Beck posed $1,500 bond and was released. He's expected back in Rolling Meadows court Oct. 15.
