Schaumburg library gears up for autumn activities

Our corner of the world still dons the look and feel of summer, but cooler temperatures and crimson leaves are right around the corner.

At the Schaumburg Township District Library, we embrace each season and holiday with special programs and events. Food, crafts and presentations take the stage in the library's autumn offerings.

Every age group has something designed just for them. The following programs, all of which require registration, reflect some of the library's autumn-themed events.

If you want the full list of programs, classes, workshops, and celebrations, check out the library's Program Guide or go to www.schaumburglibrary.org.

For adults, let's begin with desserts! (Is there a better way?) "Harvest Themed Desserts" will take place from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, in the Rasmussen North Room. Presented by author and cookbook collector Amy Alessio, this program will highlight the beginnings of fall favorites like pumpkin and apple pies.

Up next is "Costumed Ghost Ceramics" from 7-9:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, in the Rasmussen North Room. Instructor Randy Skepnek will provide instruction for completing a whimsical Halloween ghost. A fee of $15 for supplies is required upon registration.

"Patterned Pumpkins" is slated for 7-9 p.m. Monday, Sept. 29, in the Rasmussen South Room. Decoupage and embellish a patterned pumpkin with guidance from instructor Shari Pontillo.

Heading into October, we have "Bewitched Ceramics" from 7-9:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, in the Rasmussen South Room. Instructor Randy Skepnek will lead the way as you airbrush a fanciful witch. A fee of $15 for supplies is required upon registration.

If you have a taste for the macabre, come to "Graveyards of Chicago" from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, in the Rasmussen North Room. Chicago ghost hunter Ursula Bielski will take you on a virtual tour of the area's cemeteries and graveyards.

Back to the art offerings, the library invites you to get creative in "Autumnal Acrylics" from 7-9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, in the Rasmussen South Room. Instructor Randy Skepnek will help participants create a painting with five thematically-linked images. A fee of $15 for supplies is required upon registration.

If you love ghost towns, don't miss "The Ghosts of Route 66" from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, in the Rasmussen South Room. Windy City Road Warrior Dave Clark will lead attendees through the haunting legends connected to ghost towns created by the changing tides of economics and alternate paths.

Whether you're hosting Thanksgiving or looking for a unique, hand-made gift, sign up for "Turkey Ceramics" and paint an adorable pair of turkeys with pipe cleaner feet. A fee of $15 for supplies is required upon registration.

To register for adult programs, visit the Information Desk on the library's second floor, or call (847) 923-3347. Programs requiring a fee may be paid for in person or by phone with a credit card.

The library invites teens to celebrate the season with "Teen Tasters" from 6-6:45 p.m. Monday, Oct. 6, in Teen Place. Students in grades six through 12 can sample scary treats and vote on the most and least favorites.

Teens are also welcome to attend "Fall Snacks and Crafts" from 7-8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, in Teen Place. Students ages 12-19 will make fun and unique crafts with autumn leaves and other materials while enjoying fall treats and apple cider.

To register for teen programs, visit the Teen Desk or call (847) 923-3240. Teens may also sign up by sending an email to teen@stdl.org.

For children, the library has scheduled several autumn and Halloween programs in October, which will be listed in the October-November Program Guide. When the Program Guide arrives in late September, check the kidsZone section for craft and reading programs highlighting mummies, autumn leaves, Mexican sugar skulls and Thanksgiving.

For every age and almost every interest, the Schaumburg Township District Library has something to offer. Check out the Program Guide or visit the library online at www.stdl.org.
