Elgin resident arrested after apartment fire

An Elgin resident was arrested Friday night for starting a fire in his apartment, according to a fire department news release.

Elgin firefighters arrived at the apartment building at 85 S. Crystal Ave. about 7:45 p.m. and found heavy black smoke coming from a second-floor unit.

The fire, which started in a bedroom, was out within minutes. Fire investigators determined the tenant had started the blaze, according to the news release, and the tenant was arrested. The tenant's identity was not available late Friday night.

The fire caused about $6,000 in damage and left the unit uninhabitable. No other residents were displaced, and no one was injured
