A man in his 40s died after he was hit by an outbound Metra train on the Union Pacific/Northwest Line late Tuesday afternoon in Des Plaines.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:37 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Metra spokeswoman Meg Reile said the fatality involved train No. 629.

The collision occurred at the downtown Des Plaines train depot, and police responded to the scene about 5:10 p.m., according to a Des Plaines Police Department news release.

According to witnesses, the victim had stepped off the platform in front of the moving train as it came toward the station, according to the news release.
