Metra train strikes, kills man in Des Plaines

A man in his 40s died after he was hit by an outbound Metra train on the Union Pacific/Northwest Line late Tuesday afternoon in Des Plaines.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:37 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Metra spokeswoman Meg Reile said the fatality involved train No. 629.

The collision occurred at the downtown Des Plaines train depot, and police responded to the scene about 5:10 p.m., according to a Des Plaines Police Department news release.

According to witnesses, the victim had stepped off the platform in front of the moving train as it came toward the station, according to the news release.

The Des Plaines Police Department is working with the Union Pacific Railroad and Metra “to ensure all of the safety features on the depot platform were working properly at the time of the collision,” according to the release.
