$1.5 million bail for Elgin man charged in string of robberies

A judge set bail at $1.5 million for an Elgin man charged with robberies at Aldi and two at Family Dollar in Elgin in June and August.

Michael L. Taylor, 52, of the 300 block of North Crystal Street, was arrested Friday and was on parole after being released from prison in January after serving half of a 10-year sentence for a 2009 aggravated robbery in downstate Sangamon County.

Martin faces aggravated robbery charges for the Aug. 13 robbery at Aldi, 215 S. Randall Road, and two counts of aggravated robbery for the June 3 and Aug. 2 robberies at Family Dollar, 611 Dundee Ave., according to police and Kane County court records.

Taylor was picked up Friday after an officer recognized him from surveillance video.

In the Aug. 13 robbery, Taylor is accused of showing a black handgun and stealing an undisclosed amount of money. No one was injured.

In the two other robberies, a weapon was implied, but not shown, police said.

Taylor is next due in court Wednesday.

He could face 30 years in prison on each of the three robbery counts because of his past criminal record.

According to the Illinois Department of Corrections, Taylor also has served time in prison for seven previous felony convictions ranging from burglary to possession of a stolen automobile dating back to 1979.

Five felonies were in Cook County, one in DuPage County and another in Macoupin County.
