Elgin man charged in Aldi, Family Dollar robberies

A 52-year-old Elgin man has been charged in connection with a string of robberies of retailers after a police officer recognized him from surveillance video, authorities said Saturday.

Michael L. Taylor, of the 300 block of North Crystal Street, is charged with one count of armed robbery of the Aldi grocery store on Randall Road Aug. 13, according to a news release from the Elgin Police Department. Witnesses told police the suspect showed a black handgun and stole an undisclosed amount of money from a cash register before fleeing the store.

Taylor also is charged with two counts of aggravated robbery of the Family Dollar on Dundee Avenue June 3 and Aug. 2. In both robberies there, a weapon was implied but not shown, police said.

Elgin police arrested Taylor about 11:30 p.m. Friday.

Taylor is due in Kane County bond court Sunday morning.
