Want to sew and stitch with some local quilters? Come to the Des Plaines History Center, 781 Pearson St., from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 9, to join its new Quilters Group. Participants are welcome to bring their materials and spend some time creating something beautiful.
The History Center decided to offer this opportunity after several residents viewed its quilt exhibit called "Wrapped in Comfort and Community" earlier this year. During the six months that it was on display, people came not only from Des Plaines but the surrounding area to appreciate several of the History Center's historic quilts. One favorite piece was a crazy quilt -- lush in color, patterns and silk -- and was crafted in 1880.
"We noticed how interested people were in quilting, and that many of them were quilters themselves," said Philip Mohr, History Center curator and creator of the quilt exhibit. "So it seemed natural to offer residents a place to come and delve into this beloved craft together."
At its first gathering, the group will discuss a meeting schedule and potential projects. For information, call the History Center at (847) 391-5399.
The History Center gratefully acknowledges operating support from the city of Des Plaines, the Des Plaines Park District, its members, and other contributors.
