Body found in Waukegan forest preserve

Lake County Forest Preserve police discovered the body of a woman Wednesday at Lyons Woods in Waukegan, police said.

The woman was discovered after a car was left overnight at the preserve, forest preserve Executive Director Ty Kovach told commissioners in an email Wednesday afternoon.

Police first tried contacting the woman at the addresses associated with the vehicle before using search dogs to check the preserve, Kovach said.

Searchers discovered her body just before noon, Lake County Major Crimes Task Force Chief George Filenko said.

“I can't say anything yet. I'll confirm that there was a body there,” Filenko said. “Other than that, it's still an ongoing investigation.”

Filenko said more information would likely become available Thursday morning, following an autopsy by the Lake County coroner's office.
