Des Plaines officials scoop out free ice cream

Des Plaines city officials and special events commission volunteers are scooping out ice cream at a number of city parks this summer at the commission's Sunday Scoop events.

The first free ice cream event was held July 20 at Apache Park. Future Sunday Scoops are scheduled for Aug. 3 at Menominee Park, 440 Laurel Ave., and Aug. 17 at Einstein Park, 355 W. Walnut Ave. Each event runs from 1 to 3 p.m.

"It is our wish to develop family friendly activities, while promoting community and safety in the parks," said Katie Merkle, of the special events commission, in a news release. "We intend to highlight some of our smaller neighborhood parks while bringing a smile to the faces of children of all ages with some good old fashioned fun."
