Lake County man charged with striking police dog

A 30-year-old Lake County man faces multiple charges after authorities say he struck a Waukegan Police K-9 and struggled with its handler earlier this week while trying to avoid arrest in connection with a domestic altercation.

Michael S. White III, of the 4900 block of Quail Street in Zion, was charged with aggravated battery, striking a police service K-9, domestic battery and two counts each of battery and resisting a police officer stemming from the allegations, police said.

According to Waukegan police, officers were called to the 2700 block of Ridgeland Avenue at 2:45 p.m. Tuesday on reports of a man armed with a knife involved in a domestic dispute.

A person identified by police as a victim told officers White was inside the home and armed, police said. When White refused to leave the home, police said, K-9 Grizzly and his handler went in and located him hiding in an attic.

Police said Grizzly and the handler attempted to arrest White and a struggle ensued. Grizzly, the handler, and other officers finally took White into custody, according to police.

White was transported to the Lake County jail, where his bail was set at $50,000. He will appear in court Aug. 12, according to police.
