Missing Palatine man found in California

A missing Palatine man turned up safe and unharmed Thursday in Santa Monica, California, after police say he left an assisted-living facility the night before and boarded a flight at O'Hare International Airport.

Palatine police issued an alert Wednesday night after 63-year-old Leon Joffe left the assisted-living center at which he was scheduled to stay and took a cab to O'Hare about 5 p.m.

Joffe "has no known connection to California, so it is not known why he decided to take a plane there last night," according to a police news release.

He tried to access his account at a bank in Santa Monica, but the bank had already been contacted by his family so they could be alerted, the release stated.

Bank staff contacted Joffe's family in Illinois, and family members contacted police in Santa Monica.

Police said they are making arrangements for Joffe to be reunited with his family.
