A man stabbed a woman during an apparent domestic disturbance Monday night in Elgin, authorities said.

Officers responded to a home on the 600 block of Shenandoah Trail just before 7:30 p.m. after receiving reports of a stabbing.

Police said in a news release that the domestic situation involved a 56-year-old man and a 42-year-old woman, both of whom suffered serious but not life threatening injuries.

Authorities said the man's injuries appeared to be self-inflicted.

Elgin Fire Department paramedics took both people to the hospital.

Police were investigating.
