Boomers rally for 7-6 win over Rockford

LOVES PARK - The Schaumburg Boomers overcame a 5-run deficit to notch a 7-6 victory over the host Rockford Aviators in the second-half opener Thursday night.

Trailing 6-1, the Boomers were able to tie the game by scoring 5 runs in the fifth. All-star Justin Vasquez slugged a 2-run homer to open the scoring in the inning. Brian McConkey posted an RBI double with two outs to bring the Boomers within 6-4. Mark Nelson tied the game with a 2-run single.

Schaumburg took the lead for the first time on a sacrifice fly from all-star Michael Valadez to drive home Joe De Pinto.

Eddie Cody earned the win with 5 scoreless innings in relief of starter Cal Bowling. Cody struck out seven to earn his first professional victory. Dexter Price recorded the final out for his 13th save. Schaumburg lashed out 15 hits with Vasquez and Alexi Colon each picking up 3.

The Boomers (29-23) continue the series Friday night with a 7:05 p.m. contest. LHP Danny Jimenez (3-3, 3.90) on the hill against RHP Josh Slaats (4-3, 3.29).
