Grayslake man charged in drive-by shooting

A Grayslake gang member was charged with firing a gun Sunday night that sent a bullet flying through a van and into a vacant Round Lake Beach business, officials said.

Juan Tamayo, 29, was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm by a street gang member, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a weapon without a FOID card, and possession of ammunition without a FOID card.

Round Lake Beach police were called by people living on the 1300 block of Ridgeway just after 8:30 p.m. who reported that a car had driven past their house flashing gang signs and then left the area, police said in a release.

Shortly after, the same people encountered the vehicle at a strip mall on the 1200 block of Hainesville Road, where one gunshot was fired, police said.

A follow-up investigation led police to find the vehicle and gun in Grayslake.

Tamayo is being held on a $200,000 bond.
