Chili Cook Off returns to Downers Grove

Is your chili worth $500? Could it even be the best in the country?

You'll have a chance to find out in September when the second annual Chilympics Chili Cook Off returns to Downers Grove.

The homestyle chili event, organized by the Downers Grove Park District and sanctioned by the International Chili Society, is accepting applications from competitors. The winner will receive a $500 cash prize and an entry to the ICS national finals in California.

Prizes also will be awarded to the second- and third-place finishers and to the winner of the People's Choice Award.

The Chilympics takes place from noon to 4 p.m. Sept. 27 at Fishel Park, Grove Street west of Main Street, Downers Grove.

The contest is open to all ages and costs $45 to enter, which includes a $20 membership fee to ICS, a $25 park district registration fee and a commemorative T-shirt. Competitors must cook enough chili for the judges and the People's Choice tasting.

Full information and competitor application forms are available at dgparks.org. The deadline to enter is Sept. 12.
