Pedestrian hit by Metra train dies in Elgin

An inbound Metra train on the Milwaukee District West Line struck and killed a pedestrian Tuesday afternoon near Route 31 in Elgin, a spokesman said.

The train had just left the Big Timber Road station and struck the pedestrian at 3:35 p.m. before reaching the State Street station, Metra spokesman Michael Gillis said.

"They are still at the scene, but we are able to get trains through at walking speed," Gillis said. "It is a fatality."

The accident caused some delays.

"We had to cancel one outbound train from Union Station," Gillis said.

The train that was involved in the accident would have turned around once it reached Union Station to go outbound.

There are no road closures at this time, Elgin Police Cmdr. Ana Lalley said.
