Motorcyclist killed in Libertyville crash

Authorities are investigating a collision between an SUV and a motorcycle Monday night that resulted in the death of a 31-year old Waukegan man.

Police and firefighters called to Winchester Road and Butterfield Road about 9:35 p.m. found the driver of the motorcycle, Arontes Smith, with serious injuries and began administering aid. Smith was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center, where he later was pronounced dead.

Police said Smith was traveling north on Butterfield. A Ford Explorer SUV was headed south on Butterfield and attempting to turn east on Winchester when the collision occurred, according to Libertyville police Lt. Bill Kinast.

Kinast did not release the name of the driver of the SUV but said there was one passenger. Smith was traveling alone, he said. Libertyville investigators are being assisted by the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team.

No citations had been issued as of Tuesday evening, Kinast said.

"We're interviewing people and trying to find out exactly what happened at the intersection," he said.

Lake County Chief Deputy Coroner Orlando Portillo said the cause of Smith's death was multiple traumatic injuries. Portillo said Smith had alcohol in his system, but he did not disclose the amount.
