Take day trip for ride on mule-pulled boat

The Des Plaines History Center's Historic Adventures outing will take participants to LaSalle/Peru for a 90-minute round-trip journey along the Illinois Michigan Canal on a mule-pulled, full-size replica of a canalboat. Residents will meet at the History Center, 781 Pearson St., Des Plaines, at 8 a.m. Saturday, July 12, and carpool to the site, which is about two hours from Des Plaines.

Historic Adventures volunteer coordinators Janet Thompson and William G. Grice, III, look forward to traveling down this hand-dug waterway that carried the pioneers. Guides will be dressed as canal-era crew and passengers for a true-to-life glimpse into life on the American frontier and the Illinois prairie. Seating is on an open-air deck and in an enclosed cabin.

Fees for this Historic Adventure are $25 for Des Plaines History Center members and $30 for nonmembers. Youth, ages 16 and younger, will pay $15. This fee includes the canal boat ticket and transportation to and from Des Plaines. Those driving will be reimbursed for gas.

Registration and advanced payment are required. Please call the History Center at (847) 391-5399 or visit www.desplaineshistory.org.

The History Center gratefully acknowledges operating support from the City of Des Plaines, the Des Plaines Park District, its members, and other contributors.
