Daily Herald report

Palatine area children and teens have less than a week to register for the "Palatine Rocks Singing Contest," a featured event at the Rockin' the Blocks festival in downtown Palatine on Saturday, July 26.

Young people from six through 19 years old have until July 14 to sign up for their chance to compete in the Palatine Chamber of Commerce sponsored event. If more than eight enter in either of the two age categories -- juniors, ages 6-12, and teens, ages 13-19 -- a preliminary round will be held prior to the competition. To register, call the chamber at (847) 359-7200.

Contestants must enter either as a soloist or as a duet, and can choose to be accompanied by background music on a CD or from a guitar or keyboard. The song must be less than four minutes long and appropriate for all ages.

Singers will be judged in categories including tone, rhythm, timing and stage presentation. Winners in each category will receive a certificate, trophy and gift card from a local business.
