One dead, one injured in Waukegan crash

A man was killed and a woman critically injured just after 3 a.m. Sunday when their vehicle slammed into a utility pole on the 1700 block of North Lewis Avenue in Waukegan.

According to Waukegan police, the passenger of the vehicle, C.J. Allen McGill, 24, of Beach Park, was killed instantly.

The driver, Brandy N. Frederick, 25, of Waukegan, was airlifted to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville by Flight For Life. Police said they didn't have an update on her condition Sunday afternoon.

Police said witnesses to the wreck stated the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed when it struck the pole. No other cars were involved in the crash. Both occupants were wearing seat belts.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash.

Police Cmdr. Joe Florip said investigators are waiting on toxicology tests to determine if alcohol or drugs were a factor. He said no charges or citations have been filed.

"We don't want to rush to judgment until all the facts are in," Florip said.
