Charter schools just for a select few

I am dismayed that another charter school proposal is before the U-46 school board. My concerns are the negative effects these charters have on the regular educational program.

Instead of being an attempt to discover new ways to deal with at-risk students as they were originally intended to be, these schools become segregated havens for children from middle-class homes. Instead of being a source of new ideas for public schools, the charters become a drain on already limited resources.

A strong democracy needs a strong, equitable school system that is open to everyone, not just a select few.
