A way to discern who's truly in need

In response to the growing issue of panhandlers ("Rethinking help for the very poor," June 10) may I offer the following suggestion for those torn between handing out spare change or walking briskly past? Instead of handing out cash, offer to take the individual to the nearest fast food restaurant and buy them a full meal. Those truly in need will come with you and offer a heartfelt thank-you. The scam artists, who are a legitimate concern to Libertyville's Mayor Kovarik, will refuse your offer. Because, after all, leaving the corner where they are panhandling and going to restaurant takes them away from their full-time job, which is trying to separate you from your money.
