Palatine Park District offers variety of aquatic programs

Palatine Park District offers a wide variety of aquatic programming during the summer season at three aquatic facilities in Palatine.

Summer Pool Passes

Palatine Park District pool passes entitle pass holders to use all three of the park district's aquatic facilities: Eagle Pool, Birchwood Pool and the Family Aquatic Center. A variety of pool pass options are available, from seniors through households of five or more people. For complete details, rates and a downloadable registration form, visit www.palatineparks.org or see Page 35 of the Summer Catalog. Forms are also available in the lobbies of Community Center, Birchwood Recreation Center and Falcon Park Recreation Center. Birchwood and Eagle Pools are open, weather permitting, through Sept. 1, and the Family Aquatic Center is open through Aug. 10. Aquatic Programs and Classes

Palatine Park District offers a wide variety of aquatic programs for all ages. American Red Cross Learn to Swim lessons are offered for children ages 3 and up. Classes are offered during the day and in the evening, with limited Saturday options as well. Weekday sessions are held throughout the summer, beginning June 16, June 30, July 14, and July 28. Saturday classes begin June 7.

Private swim lessons are also available to fit your schedule, ability, and instruction needs. Lessons can be arranged by calling the lesson coordinator at (847) 496-6205.

Water aerobics classes offer the benefits of a fitness class using the resistance and buoyancy of the water. Fees are arranged through a punch card system that allows you to take classes that best meet your schedule. Classes are offered Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to noon, and on Saturdays from 10-11 a.m. Classes will be held from June 9 to Aug. 14.

Additional aquatic classes are also offered throughout the summer including Masters Swimming, Water Polo Clinics, Northwest Chicago Water Polo Team, Learn to Kayak, Scuba, Snorkeling, and Junior Lifeguarding classes. Complete program information is available at www.palatineparks.org.

Aquatic Facilities

Eagle Pool was originally built in 1976, and was remodeled in 2012. The new design offers an enlarged zero-depth tot pool with alligator slide and bubbles. The main pool has one 3-meter diving board and two one-meter diving boards along with a mid-size slide. A newly designed ADA bathhouse, admissions breezeway, offices, redesigned concession area, and new landscaping were also added with the remodel. Eagle Pool has a bather load of 428 and is located at 1425 N. Oak St., Palatine.

Birchwood Pool was renovated in 2007. This 1,000 bather aquatic facility includes an eight lane 50-meter competitive pool, a 25-yard lap pool, a 1,000 square foot tot pool with zero-depth entry and a shark slide, a splash pad spray pool with geysers, dumping buckets, spray hoops and a water mushroom. Birchwood also boasts a separate diving well with a drop slide, 3-meter diving platform and a 1-meter diving board. Birchwood Pool is at 435 W. Illinois Ave., Palatine. Birchwood Pool is the home of the Palatine Park District Tiger Sharks Swim Team.

Family Aquatic Center opened in 1999. The 1,300 capacity water park includes two 180-foot slides, two tot slides, a water fall and cavelike area, a sand play area, a six-lane lap pool, water play bubblers and sprayers, a large lawn area, three rentable picnic areas and a concession stand. Family Aquatic Center is located at 340 E. Palatine Road, Palatine.
