Movies, concerts part of Live at the Lake series

The Des Plaines Park District's 2014 Live at the Lake Summer Entertainment Series returns to Lake Park this year with a five-week lineup of free Thursday evening outdoor music and dance shows.

Audience participation is applauded and families are encouraged to come out early to picnic and play in the park. This year's performances include:

7-8:30 p.m. Thursday, June 26: The Barefoot Hawaiian. This professional, authentic Polynesian-style performing troupe of dancers and drummers will recreate the colors and flavors of the islands.

7-8 p.m. Thursday, July 10: Des Plaines Park District Community Concert Band. Under the direction of William Gilmer, enjoy a musical evening of Broadway and movie scores, patriotic marches, and classic and popular hits from the band's wide repertoire.

7-8:30 p.m. Thursday, July 17: Rio Bamba. World-class musicians play a unique blend of Bossa Nova, Samba, and American and Latin jazz, including standards and original music.

7-8:30 p.m. Thursday, July 24: Artistry in Motion Dance Company. The Des Plaines Park District's own award-winning dance company performs a mix of jazz, ballet, modern, hip-hop, and tap routines.

7-8:30 p.m. Thursday, July 31: Five Guys Named Moe. A classic rock-n-roll band that delivers energy, this group features lead vocalists with magnificent harmonies, horns and percussion and delivers a nonstop party.

All performances take place at the Lake Park Memorial Pavilion, 2200 Lee St., north of Touhy Avenue. Street parking is free. For weather-related information, call (847) 391-5705 after 6 p.m. on the day of the performance.

The Optimist Club of Des Plaines also returns to the Lake Park Memorial Pavilion to show free movies on the big screen Fridays this summer. Movies start at 8 p.m. Popcorn, drinks and snacks are available for purchase starting at 7 p.m.

The 2014 screenings are:

Friday, June 27: "Despicable Me 2." While Gru, the ex-super villain is adjusting to family life and an attempted honest living in the jam business, a secret Arctic laboratory is stolen. The Anti-Villain League decides it needs an insider's help and recruits Gru in the investigation.

Friday, July 11: "Wreck It Ralph." Wreck-It Ralph longs to be as beloved as his game's perfect Good Guy, Fix-It Felix. He escapes into a popular first-person shooter, but inadvertently wreaks havoc in the video-game universe by freeing a digital villain who can only be contained with the help of a most unlikely ally.

Friday, July 25: "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2." Flint discovers that his most infamous machine (which turns water into food) is still operating and is now creating food-animal hybrids - "foodimals!" With the fate of humanity in his hands, Flint and his friends must battle hungry tacodiles, shrimpanzees, hippotatomuses, cheespiders and other food creatures to save the world.

Friday, Aug. 8: "Back to the Future." Marty McFly, a typical American teenager of the 1980s, is accidentally sent back to 1955 in a plutonium-powered DeLorean "time machine" invented by a mad scientist. During his trip back in time, Marty must make certain his teenage parents-to-be meet and fall in love so he can get back to the future.
