Wauconda residents help make DUI arrest after driver strikes parked cars

Citizens detained suspected drunken driver until police arrived on the scene Saturday night after the man reportedly smashed into several parked cars in a Wauconda neighborhood.

Esteban Cristein-Lagunes, 63, of McHenry, was charged with driving under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident, driving without insurance, failure to give information after striking an unattended vehicle, improper lane usage and having no valid driver's license after the series of crashes just before 10 p.m. Saturday in the 1200 block of Larkdale Row.

Wauconda police Sgt. Tony Jacobson said than when officers arrived at the scene in response to a report of a vehicle in a ditch, people were holding down the suspected driver.

Cristein-Lagunes was released Sunday morning on a recognizance bond and is scheduled to appear in a Waukegan courtroom on July 7.
